![]() As organic foods are starting to become more popular in today’s society, so is the use of organic hair products. Many people who like to use these organic products do so in order to avoid chemicals that are used in non-organic products. But what they don’t know is that many of the so called “organic” products use the same chemicals as there non-organic counterparts. Let’s start off with a breakdown of how these products are certified and labeled. The Federal Organic Legislation classifies three levels of organic products in the United States. The first category contains products that are made with a minimum of 70% organic ingredients. These products are allowed to put labels with the phrase “made with organic ingredients”. The next category is made up of products that use at least 95% organic ingredients. These products are allowed to use the word “organic” in their labels. The final category of products are those that use all organic ingredients and methods. These products are allowed to use labels that say “100% organic”. Products that are deemed 95% or 100% organic are also able to use the USDA organic seal. If you are looking for products that use only organic ingredients it may be a little tricky since companies are allowed to put labels that can be misleading. Many products that claim to be “natural” or “organic” contain 1,4-dioxane which has been classified as an ether and is a known eye irritant. At first glance you might think that a label saying “made with organic ingredients” would really have all natural ingredients, even though it is only required to have 70% organic ingredients. So if you are looking for products that contain only organic ingredients, make sure they have a label that says “100% organic”.
