hair updoSometimes flavor of the month hairstyles or outrageous colors won’t work. Sometimes you need to be a classy dame. For those times, consider an updo. By sweeping the hair away from the face, pinning it on the crown of your head, or sporting a partial updo, you can transform yourself from a drone to a princess in a few minutes. If you haven’t worn an updo since your prom night or wedding day, there are a few basic styles for every hair length. And you don’t need to wait for a special event or party to wear one. I talked to Diane Gardner of Tina Cassady Salon about some basic updo styles.

For medium hair, Gardner recommends “a partial updo with hair pulled away from the face and more volume in front. “

If you have longer hair, a side updo adds a touch of class. “You can pull it back on one side and wear it long on the other side.” Kate Walsh of Grey Anatomy’s wore this style at the Emmys.

Gardner also describes a hot new updo style for long hair. “First you wave the hair (with a clipless iron), then put the hair in a ponytail. Then roll the ponytail up so thay the rest of the hair (in the back) fans out almost in a bob. It’s a very soft, romantic look.” This style can be worn with or without bangs.

Celebrity Updos

We’ve all seen our favorite celebs walking down in the red carpet in glamorous gowns, with their hair looking equally fab, pinned and pampered on top of their heads. Diane runs down some of the looks on the party and awards show circuit this season.
  • Grammy nominee Amy Winehouse's “up-do is teased heavily in the crown then wrapped and secured with a thick headband, leaving the bangs and back down.”
  • Singer and blonde bombshell Jessica Simpson “keeps a sultry look by simply pinning
the back of her hair up in many sections (or pieces).”
  • Angelina Jolie “pulls her hair up in a tight twist which only looks good on someone as gorgeous as her!”
“In fact,” adds Gardner, “the number one mistake women make in reparing for a formal event is pulling their hair lat against their head and ending up looking like a inhead!”
