For those of you that suffer from hair loss or thinning hair, there’s good news and bad news. The bad news: it has been proven that hair loss is 90 percent genetic. The good news is there are a few things you can do to keep those strands secure for as long as you can. 1. You Are What You Eat:Eat a balanced diet. Eating disorders and nutritional deficiencies are linked to hair loss. If you have a difficult time incorporating a balanced array of vitamins into your diet, supplement with a multi-vitamin like Centrum. Avoid excessive amounts of vitamins A and E as they are also linked to hair loss.2. Limit the Chemicals You Put In Your Hair:Harsh chemicals from hair color, perms and chemical straighteners are terrible for your scalp and your hair. As a general rule, don’t color your hair more than once every six to eight weeks and unless you know you’ll always have a full head of hair, stay away from perms and chemical straighteners that are abrasive and irritating to your scalp.3. Keep Your Hairstyles Loose & Free:Avoid hairstyles that are tight or ones that tug on your scalp like ponytails, fancy updos, cornrows, and braids. If you must put your hair up, use hair clips instead of hair ties.4. Shampooing & Conditioning is a Gentle Process:Be gentle in the shower when you’re scrubbing down those locks. Gently massage your scalp to promote circulation and never scratch your scalp with your fingernails. This is much too abrasive for thinning hair. Your hair and scalp will be just as clean.5. Remember, Losing Some Hair Daily is Normal:The average person loses between 100-150 strands of hair per day so don’t fret when you realize your shower drains are clogging up. Unless there are noticeable differences when your hair is dry, it’s nothing to stress about.Keep these tips in mind if you suffer from hair loss and you can be sure you’re keeping those strands pinned for as long as you genetically can. If all else fails, there’s always Rogaine!
