The best way to avoid out there hair is to visit your stylist every three months.

Just as your car needs fresh oil every three months or so, your “do” needs a fresh change as well. Of course, you can always go before the recommended three months depending on how much abuse you give your locks!

By getting your hair trimmed every three months you can help avoid split ends and out of shape, shaggy hair. So how do you know you need to drop in on your hairstylist? I can usually tell when I need a trim by judging how long it takes me to style my hair. When hair is out of shape or has split ends it takes longer to get it to work for you.

If you use heat on your hair on a regular basis you need to trim the ends frequently. If you use (or abuse!) hair color products three months may be the limit on your head. Coincidentally, coloring on damaged hair will result in a bad dye job. Trust me on this!

So now that you are aware of the three month rule here are more suggestions to help you out. Make sure you pick a reliable stylist. Check out some of the stylist’s clients before you hand yourself over. Test drive the stylist with a trim or blowdry first. Resist the temptation to try something radical or new before a big event. Avoid a new haircut and color at the same time. The whole point of getting a haircut every three months is to get a gradual and stylish look.  And last but definitely not least, pick a hairstyle that flatters you face versus the newest trend in haircuts.

Remember that your hairstyle is an extension, literally, of your personality! It is also a bit of a fashion accessory. No matter what you wear you will not look put together if your hair is a mess.
