Ever wonder if those old wives tales about hair care were true or not?  Well here are 10 of the most common and oldest myths and the truth about each one.
  1. Washing Your Hair Every Day Will Cause It To Dry Out – Not true.  Shampoos are designed as a detergent to clean and moisturize your hair.  Conditioners are like lotion for your hair specifically designed to protect your hair from drying out.  If you use the correct shampoo and conditioner for your specific hair type, it will not cause your hair to dry out.

  2. Cutting Hair Makes It Grow In Thicker and Faster – Not true. Hair grows about half an inch or 10 cm a month. Cutting your hair will not accelerate the natural growth rate of your hair or make it thicker.

  3. Stress Makes Your Hair Fall Out – True. Stress can make you lose your hair but the stress needs to be an extraordinary life event.  Major life events like surgery, divorce, or the loss of a family can trigger such stress that leads to noticeable hair loss.

  4. Sharing Hair Tools Can Spread Disease – True.  Lice and other parasites can be transmitted to other people by coming into contact with styling tools such as combs and brushes that were use by an infected person.

  5. Using 100 Strokes To Brush Your Hair is Good – Not true.  Excessively brushing you hair will cause your hair to rip out or break and increasing the chance of getting split ends.

  6. Using The Same Shampoo Over Time Causes The Hair To Develop Immunity – Not true.  Many people believe this is true but there is no scientific data to prove this.  People may feel that their hair loses it’s softness over time when using the same shampoo.  Often times, they are not thoroughly washing their hair, leaving dulling deposits in their hair that can build up over time.

  7. Chemicals In Swimming Pools Will Cause Hair To Turn Green – True.  Natural blonds and people with chemically highlighted hair can have their hair turn green with frequent pool use.  Use moisturizing shampoo and leave-in conditioners that will guard against chemicals such as chlorine and trace metals.

  8. Lemon Juice To Highlight Your Hair Actually Works – Not True.  The only thing that will happen is your hair will smell like lemons.

  9. A Cheaper Drugstore Product Will Work Just As Good As One From A Salon – Not True.  This is a definite no.  Salon products are made with higher quality and more effective ingredients with several factors like protection, texture, moisture, and usability.  You get what you pay for with hair products.

  10. A Sun Burnt Scalp Can Lead To Hair Loss – True.  The sun can damage the follicles which can result in hair loss.  If you have a genetic form of hair loss, frequent sunburns can accelerate the hair loss process.

I always enjoy these myth busting articles. Since watching "Twin Peaks," I've wondered if stress was a factor in premature greying. I've also wondered if products for specific hair colours are actually more beneficial than an indiscriminate product. It's always seemed like quite a stretch to me since the only difference between hair colours that I know of is the concentration of melanin.

Stress yes can cause grey hair. I know because I got a grey patch after my heart surgery. Shampoos for specific hair Colors are very benificial. It is not melanin that is in hair, it is pigment. Shampoos that are for specific colors, are pigmented as such. They leave a small amount of color to enhance or lengthen color treated hair treatments. They are also benificial for natual hair as well if you style your hair or are in the outside elaments often. They will brighten and leave a nice shine behind.
