A good way to find a great stylist is to ask your manicurist. They usually can direct you to a reputable hairdresser. Make sure you start out slow with a new hairdresser. Get a trim or a blowdry first. Make sure the stylist really listens to you and your requests.
Another way is to advertise for a hairstylist. Go on Craigslist and advertise the type of stylist you are looking. You will get better results if the stylist you hire is experienced and is cutting hair on the side. Many stylists start building their own business this way. You may get lucky and find a very good stylist who is willing to do your hair for a low price. Make sure you see a portfolio and maybe even get references.
If you admire someone’s style ask for a referral. Contact the stylist directly. Even if the hairdresser works for a salon you might be able set up an appointment away from the salon. And it will probably be cheaper than paying the salon fees. Beauticians are always looking for extra work!
And lastly try the beautician schools. There are some good ones out there. Go by and check out how clients are treated and serviced. Ask to see the portfolio of the stylist who will work on your hair. Don’t be afraid to ask the instructor who the best stylist is. Specify what service you are looking for so the instructor can direct you to the appropriate student. When you find a good stylist make sure you give her good references. Once in a while the stylist will reward you with discounts on hair services.
Following tips apply even after you find a great stylist. Last but not least, try to avoid a new stylist before any big event. For that matter avoid any big hairstyle change before an event.
