When I think about hair accessories, a parade of banana clips, scrunchie’s, and rhinestone clips march through my head. It must be the nostalgic jersey girl in me trying to get out. Even though we have seen the 80’s come back with a vengeance in the past several years, the only time a banana clip should be worn is at an 80’s inspired costume party or a Cindy Lauper tribute concert. However, there is an enormous amount of choices when it comes to using your hair as an accessory. The obvious options like bandanas and hats are always in fashion. But the problem with them is that they cover your hair, which is great for a bad hair day but a waste for a good one. Don’t waste those good hair days, use them to your advantage.
We are so used to accessorizing our bodies with jewelry and even our clothes with fashionable pins and flowers that we forget about our hair. Who needs Tiffany’s anymore? Try skipping the earrings, necklace, or bracelet one day and focus on some bling for your hair. Most beauty stores have a wide variety of hair clips, pins, and other colorful items to choose from. I have fallen in love with tiny claw clips that just pin up small pieces of hair. And I also have been accessorizing with faux flowers and even using hair pieces to make my hair look fuller and add some temporary highlights. I have an assortment of accessories in all different shapes, sizes, and colors to suit my wardrobe and my mood. I also love to browse craft stores for colorful ribbons and silk flowers on the stem. I cut the stem to the appropriate length to fit snuggly behind my ear.

The only drawback to fresh flowers is that they do not last extremely long, depending on the variety. But they sure do look and smell pretty, at least for a few hours. Live flowers are a good choice for a shorter event in the evening or during the day. To my surprise, it seems that tiaras are back in style. We are seeing them on the red carpet and brides are choosing to sport them on their big day. I am also loving those small head pieces or mini hats with the netting attached. It’s a very old Hollywood look. Now if you are lacking enthusiasm for the idea of using hair accessories, you can style your hair to emulate this idea. Funky braids, pig tails, and wild curls are a fabulous way to go. I’m a huge fan of tease combs and Aqua Net. Uh oh! The jersey girl escaped again!
If you’re like me and have sporadic creative blocks when it comes to your hairstyle, you may need some expert advice. Find a great stylist and have them create a new look for you. Don’t get stuck in a rut. You should love your hair, at least most of the time. And don’t be afraid to try new things and ask for advice. You never know, hair accessories may become your new best friend.
