Here’s How You Can Get It

As soon as photos of Katie Holmes in her sassy new bob popped up on celebrity blogs, the public at large took to it immediately. Mrs. Tom Cruise seemed to transform from a merely a cute girl into a sophisticated Mom just from this short, sleek haircut. Without bangs, she looked worldly yet playful. When she added bangs recently, she became a femme fatale. While catty types debated its merits on message boards, many women traveled  to their hairstylists for a personalized version of the cut

The bob, has been around in American lore since the 1920s flapper era, and was popularized again in the 1960s by groovy models like Twiggy. The bob has always been a hair fashion touchstone for its versatility and “wash, brush and go” ease.

It wasn’t til Katie’s best friend, Victoria “Posh Spice” Beckham hit the scene with her severe angular bob that tongues started wagging about the bob haircut. Not since Jennifer Aniston ”Rachel” craze during the Friends era, has a haircut caused this much commotion. But while Aniston’s long, layer hair heralded a ‘90s craze, short hair is in for 2008.

Beckham’s show biz cut predated Katie’s, and it’s fine for clubbing and nights on the town, but Katie’s take on the bob is adaptable to the lives of folks off the movie set and out of the spotlight. With the Beckham style,the sides and front cut from back and angled, forming a sharp, geometric shape. Katie’s version of the bob is softer, shaped to the contours of the head.

The bob works best with fine, thin hair due to the angle and/or layering of the cut.  If you have naturally curly or wavy hair, you won’t be able to get the Holmes style without straightening your tresses.

You don’t need to spend a lot of money to get the perfect bob. You can visit your neighborhood salon or any reputable stylist.. Whether you’re in Petaluma or Beverly Hills, you can find a stylist to do it.

There are many variations to the bob style. It’s best to suited for straight hair, you can bob for curly or way hair but that’s not the best style.  Makes thin hair look fuller bobs can be straight across or layered with prominent bangs or no bangs.
The Holmes bob is cut in a warm C shape that gives it more swing and bounce, unlike Victoria’s shorter, cooler style.

Take a photo of Katie’s haircut with you to the stylist if that’s what you’re after, but consider a playful Dutch cut bob which features bangs that cover a high forehead. Your hairdresser will use razors to layer a bob, and use scissors to form angles and length. Think about your image, facial features and lifestyle to determine the bob style that’s right for you.  

It’s easy to keep your new bob looking good.  Drugstore shampoos like Herbal Essence or Suave will work just as well as pricey brands, but guard against flyaway hair with conditioners. A bob can be air dried or blow dried.  The sides can be flipped under or over with a curling iron or worn behind the ears depending on your mood.
